R2 Naming System
Robert P. Munafo, 1999 Feb 2.
The R2 system is an Analytical Naming System; see that entry for a definition and a list of other similar systems.
R2 names are symbolic, like mathematical expressions and chemical formulas.
Here are some example R2 names: R2a, R2F(2/5B1), R2F(1/3B1)S, R2.1/2.C(1/5)+, and R2F(2)FS[3/7][0]{[2]}x5J8. If you wish to learn the R2 System by example, start with the entry R2 Name Examples (which explains these example names in detail).
There are more R2 names throughout Mu-Ency, notably the following entries : R2, R2.1/2.1/5a, R2.1/2.C(1/2), R2.1/2a, R2.1/3, R2.3/4a, R2.2/5a, R2.C(0), R2.C(1/2), R2F(1/2B), R2F(1/2B1)FS[2]FS[2]FS[2]S, R2F(1/2B1)S, R2F(1/2B1)S.C(0), R2F(1/3B*).
The rules of the R2 system are described under the heading R2 Rules. See also R2 scope.
Alternatives to analytical naming systems are colloquial names and coordinates used as names.
History and anecdotes (including a description of earlier versions of the R2 System) appear under R2 History.
